Aloo tikki is a popular Indian street food snack made with potatoes and spices. Aloo is the Indian name for potatoes and tikki is for patty that translates to potato patties. These potato patties are flavorful, crisp and delicious often eaten as a snack

Ingredients

  • 4-5 medium boiled potatoes

  • ½ tsp ginger paste

  • ½ tsp garlic paste

  • ½ tsp garam masala

  • ½ tsp pepper powder

  • ½ tsp chaat masala

  • ½ tsp dried mango powder

  • 3-4 green chilli (chopped)

  • 1 tbsp dried cilantro

  • 2 tbsp rice flour

  • 1 tbsp bread crumbs

  • ¼ tsp salt

  • 1 cup cottage cheese (Paneer)

  • ½ cup shredded cheese

  • 2 tbsp oil (For frying the patty)

Directions

  • Grate or smash the boiled potatoes using a grater/ smasher into a large bowl. Ensure that the potatoes are completely cooled before adding the spices and other ingredients
  • Now, add the ginger paste, garlic paste, garam masala, pepper powder, chaat masala, dried mango powder, chopped green chilli, dried cilantro, rice flour, bread crumbs and salt
  • Bind the mixture together to make a ball. Add some more bread crumbs if the mixture is sticky
  • Divide the mixture into equal portions, flatten them out and stick up the cracked edges
  • Heat oil in a cast iron or non stick pan to medium heat
  • Fry the patty on medium heat and do not disturb them until the patty turns golden brown. Flip them and fry on both sides until golden and crisp
  • Serve these aloo tikkis hot and with mint chutney

PRO TIP

  • Avoid overcooking the potatoes and cooking them in a pot will help monitor them until the potatoes are soft
  • You can also cook the potatoes in a pressure cooker or in a steamer
  • Instead of rice flour, you can also add chickpea flour or make a fine powder of flattened rice that you can add to bind the mix
