Onion Bhajiyas

Crispy onion bhajiyas make a light, delicious evening snack that are light, crispy and are super delicious with a hot cup of tea! We love pairing this up with homemade Mumbai Pav that is very easy to bake!

These bhajiyas do not require any special ingredients. All you need is thinly sliced onions, chickpea flour, some spices and oil for deep frying! We have never tried this recipe in an air fryer and would love to know in the comments below if any of you have used the air fryer to make these delicious onion bhajiyas/pakoras.

Making this recipe is very easy and will not take you more than 30 minutes from start to finish.  

Enjoy these as an appetizer or a snack! These are highly addictive and you can’t stop eating unless you have had at least half a dozen of these!!

Procedure

  • In a large bowl, combine the chickpea flour with spices like coriander powder, cumin powder, kashmiri red chilli powder, turmeric powder and salt. 
  • Whisk the mix well and aerate the mix
  • Add the thinly sliced onions and rub the mix over the onions. The onions will leave its juices and keep kneading the onions in this spice flour mix till it comes together 
  • Heat the oil in a large wok for deep frying (Use around 2-3 cups of oil so that you can deep fry the bhajiyas, the oil would take around 10 minutes to heat up well)
  • Using your fingers, carefully drop about a tablespoon on the batter into the hot oil cooking about 3-4 bhajis at a time. Fry for about a minute on each side and then flip the bhajis to get the other side until golden. 
  • Remove each bhaji with a slotted spoon and place on a tray lined with a paper towel to drain the excess oil.
  • Continue deep frying the bhajiyas until the whole whole batter is utilized
  • Serve these hot on their own or with a cucumber mint raita and enjoy!

PRO TIP

  • Using the same chickpea flour and spice mix, you can also make potato bhajias, Cauliflower pakoras or use any vegetable of your choice and these would be a great spice batter deep fried veggies similar to the beer batter veggies
