minutesChana chaat is a light and refreshing indian salad that is usually made with chopped vegetables like onions, tomatoes, green chillies and lime juice. Occasionally, boiled potatoes are also toasted in this salad! We prefer this chaat in between meals or sometimes even as a light accompaniment with the main course! This salad is mixed with chaat masala which is an Indian spice mix and with dried mango powder! This salad can be served both warm or cold as you prefer
Ingredients
2 cups brown chickpeas
1 large onions, chopped
2 tomatoes, chopped
2 green chillies, finely chopped
1 tsp chaat masala
1 tsp dried mango powder
1 tsp salt (cooking the chickpeas)
1 tbsp lime juice
¼ cup coriander leaves, finely chopped
Directions
- To make this dish, I usually soak the brown chickpeas overnight in water and pressure cook them with salt the next day for about 4-5 whistles! Alternately, you can use canned chickpeas which I do not prefer for this salad, but is a shortcut
- Strain out the excess water after you have slow cooked the chickpeas
- In a large bowl, add the chopped onions, chopped tomatoes, finely chopped green chillies! Add the chickpeas and give this all a nice toss
- Time to make this salad flavorful by adding chaat masala, dried mango powder and lime juice
- Give this another nice toss to ensure this spice blend has well coated the chickpeas
- Add a handful of coriander leaves, either finely chop them or leave them as is!
- Serve with an extra wedge of lime incase if you want some extra tanginess to this fresh chickpea salad
PRO TIP
- This salad can be made using both yellow or brown chickpeas and can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2-3 days
